Dyslexia  Screening and Intervention

Johnny slowly labors through his reading, as he trips over unfamiliar words and often guesses instead of sounding them out. He struggles with comprehension and understanding, which frustrates him. Most of the time he doesn’t want to read at all. When writing, Johnny has difficulty with spelling and mixing up letters in words.

Dyslexia is characterized by difficulty in accurately and fluently decoding and encoding words, despite having normal or above-average intelligence. Evaluation is important in order to determine the specific areas of challenge. Dyslexia testing typically involves administering a series of standardized tests and assessments to determine the presence and severity of dyslexia, including measures of phonemic awareness, decoding skills, reading comprehension, and spelling ability.

Atypical Learning can screen for Dyslexia, and provide an intervention program to treat it.  The use of specialized teaching methods and instructional strategies are designed to help individuals with dyslexia improve their orthographic mapping and comprehension skills and learn to read and spell more accurately and fluently. Through intervention and one-on-one instruction, Atypical Learning can help individuals with dyslexia develop the skills and strategies they need to succeed in school and in life.

To receive a formal diagnosis of Dyslexia and accommodations in school a neuropsychological assessment is necessary. Please call Atypical Learning for questions and more information.
